Professional chromatic tuner for iPhone and iPad.
SuperTuner is not a toy tuner or a simple frequency counter. It implements professional stroboscopic tuning principles, five distinct meter display modes, 100+ instrument presets, and adaptive layouts for every iOS screen, built from the ground up with the same signal processing standards used in high-end hardware tuners.
Display
Each meter is designed for a different use case, from the snap of an LED bar on a dark stage to the precision of a true stroboscopic display in a recording environment. All five modes work in full-screen landscape.
12-segment horizontal bar. Center LEDs glow green when locked in tune. Immediate read at a glance.
Analog-style semicircular sweep with cyan gradient arc and layered glow. Smooth 0.15s easeOut animation.
True stroboscopic display driven by real Goertzel harmonic analysis, not a simulation. Four rows, each representing a live harmonic of the detected note. Bands freeze when locked. Same physics as a $500 Peterson strobe tuner.
Live FFT on a logarithmic frequency axis (30–2000 Hz). 4096-point resolution. Color transitions from blue to green as pitch locks in.
Oversized note name with directional triangle indicators. Three triangles per side light progressively with deviation. Designed for visibility on stage and for musicians with low vision.
Features
Guitar in 22 tunings (standard through 8-string), bass, violin, viola, cello, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, pedal steel, Latin American strings (Charango, Venezuelan Cuatro, Jarana, Tiple Colombiano), world classical (Sitar, Tanpura, Veena, Erhu, Sarangi), woodwinds, reeds, and brass. Preset note lock constrains detection to the selected tuning, preventing snapping to adjacent chromatic notes.
Ten historical and modern reference standards, plus a free-form slider from 400–480 Hz at 0.1 Hz resolution. Calibration affects all pitch detection, note naming, cents calculation, and tone generation. Essential for period-instrument performers and orchestral players.
Four waveforms: Sine, Triangle, Sawtooth, Square. A reference tone button for every note in the current tuning preset. Click-free start/stop via 25ms cross-fade state machine. Below 450 Hz, sine waves are enriched with subtle 2nd and 3rd harmonics to compensate for small phone speaker response. Speaker protection scaling prevents mechanical distortion on sub-bass. When a tone is playing, the tuner automatically recognizes its own harmonics and won't false-read them.
Triple haptic pulse when pitch locks in tune for 0.5 seconds or more. Fires once per session, then resets when the note changes or pitch drifts. Toggle on or off in settings.
Any meter mode can expand to fill the full screen in landscape. Controls compact to a single-row tone bar at the bottom. Designed for live performance. Maximum visibility, minimum interface.
Four distinct adaptive layouts for iPhone portrait, iPhone landscape, iPad portrait, and iPad landscape. All dimensions scale proportionally and clamp to prevent unusable extremes. Meters scale more aggressively, up to 1.8×, since they benefit most from additional screen real estate.
Under the Hood
SuperTuner's pitch detection uses autocorrelation with per-lag normalization, a time-domain algorithm that directly measures waveform periodicity. Unlike standard autocorrelation, per-lag normalization eliminates the systematic sharp bias that affects most tuners, producing accurate readings across the full dynamic range of an instrument.
Harmonic coherence scoring distinguishes real instrument notes from environmental noise (HVAC rumble, traffic, room resonance), even at low frequencies where noise contamination is most problematic. The algorithm adapts to the signal, not the other way around.
The stroboscopic meter uses the Goertzel algorithm to compute harmonic energy at specific frequencies in real time, the same physical principle as an analog strobe disc, not a visual approximation of one.
